[At some point during the night, you awaken.

Whatever unfortunate soul had been residing in this body is no longer conscious. You're in control now - a malicious spirit who preys on people's guilt, using it as a doorway into their minds. It doesn't matter whether their guilt is justified or not; as long as they carry it, they leave themselves open to your possession.

Fortunately for them, and unfortunately for you, your power is still quite weak. You can only control them for a certain amount of time at night; in the morning, they will wake up with no memories of your presence whatsoever. Luckily, a few hours is all you need to begin setting up what will hopefully be a permanent occupation of this body.

After all, you and seven others are the only people who know the secret behind this place: everyone here, back in their own world, is either dead or about to die.

However, there's still a chance that a few of you may be able to survive. While the cat isn't going to bother saving nearly thirty people from death, if there were a great deal less...well, it might be more open to that suggestion. But in order for that to happen, you and your fellow spirits must prove that you deserve to live more than the rest of the people here. If you manage to outnumber the innocents, you'll be able to completely rewrite the person you're currently possessing and take their place in their world.

Of course, with the cat in charge of which cases everyone will be reviewing, this may prove harder than you think....

As you leave your bedroom and enter the hallway, you'll find a black door that wasn't there before during the day. The door opens into a darkened room, where you can meet the other spirits and discuss who to kill.]

[As you consider who to kill, all of you will be able to sense a strange presence surrounding some of the innocents here. The cat has begun to make its move. Every week, it will grant protection to the people it finds most useful or active in solving the cases. You can immediately detect who they are - if you try to kill someone under the cat's protection, you may find your case to be much easier to solve.

However, everything in this place must come at a price. For every person the cat grants protection to, it takes away from someone else. You know these names as well - if you kill someone who's been left vulnerable, your case could get a lot more complicated in your favor.]

[ There's a tall, tattooed man here- someone that hasn't been seen in this place before. But he doesn't look lost, or disoriented. ]

So that dog hasn't figured it out yet. In any case, I will be using this form when possible.

[Klavier stares at the man in confusion when he walks in, but then bursts out into delighted laughter at his comment.]

And here I was pitying whoever was unlucky enough to possess the dog! It seems as though you're full of surprises.

[Kaoru doesn't burst into laughter, but he sure looks like he wants to... he politely covers his mouth instead, though.]

I can't say it suits you any more than the dog.

...You're the dog?

[He lets out a low, breathy laugh. This was certainly unusual.]

Who would have known! But it's a good thing... You would have been useless as anything but bait if you couldn't change shape like that.

[Athena seems just as expressive as usual, but there's something a little different - Widget, the necklace she wears that usually reflects her emotions, has gone completely blank, shut off.]

With that girl Sayaka dying like that, the others will probably be wary. We might just be able to pull this off.

They will find it difficult to come together now. We need to get them while their guards are down. The first few ought to be easy, while they're still in shock.

You know, I think you may be right. A lot of them still had sympathy for her right to the very end too, didn't they...? I think yours was one of them.

My host is petrified! I'm sure there are plenty of others as weak as him. As long as we move wisely, victory is as good as ours.

[There's definitely something different about Naho. She's more expressive now, in an interesting way that she hasn't been since coming to this place. But it's most definitely still Naho down to the core.]

Not even Miss Paranormalist has any idea what's going on inside of her. So the others are probably even more in the dark than she is.

Well, some of them are weak. That's the simplest place to start, hmm?

Sounds good to me, huhuhu... [He grins sharp and crooked.] We'll pick them off and crush them one by one, like insects.

Ah, you got really lucky. [jealous!! a person like Naho has already earned trust from many, which would surely make things at least a little easier for her. at the last statement, though:]

The weak ones and the quiet ones tend to overlap, too. Should we go for one that falls under both categories?

[Malik's looking a fair bit different himself. As if the glowing wadjet on his forehead wasn't enough, his hair was standing on end. He's got a more relaxed, almost drugged look to him as well, and his voice is deeper and more languid than the usual sharpness he displays.]

Huhuhu... My host is petrified, but he's too easily lead into denial to realize what's going on, so I don't think it'll be an issue.

I say we kill the weakest ones first. The more we can pick off without diminishing our numbers, the better, right? Besides, I want to see them squirm!

Let's talk about who to kill! Our biggest threats in the long run are probably the ones who are really judgmental, who didn't really mind sending Sayaka to her grave.

But while we're still testing ourselves out, let's focus on the ones who are vulnerable.

[The ironic thing is, if he could go "home," his host's family would end up liking their new son a lot better than the real one.]

We need to confuse 'em. They're so scared, they'll jump to conclusions, right? A little misdirection, and they'll never know who did it.
